Jacob J. Hammel

Jacob J. Hammel, 91, of Du Quoin, passed away at 4:35 P.M., Tuesday, October 19, 2004 at his residence.
Jacob was a retired washer/operator for Majestic Coal Mine.  He was also a farmer and carpenter.  He joined the Old Du Quoin Baptist Church in 1947 where he was RA Director and also Junior Boys Sunday School Teacher for several years.  He was also member of UMW of A and Carpenters Union.
He was a wonderful husband, father, grandfather and great grandfather.  He was precious to his family and will be greatly missed.
He was born March 15, 1913 at Jackson County, IL, the son of Truman and Wilma (Harriss) Hammel.
He married Jessie A. Bowlin on October 30, 1937 at the Methodist Church Parsonage in Du Quoin, IL and she survives.
He is survived by his wife of Du Quoin, two sons - Larry Hammel and wife Wilma of Du Quoin and Ron Hammel and wife Gayla of Du Quoin, one sister - Letta Perry of Du Quoin, five grandchildren - Bethany McConville of Arlington, TN, Kyle Hammel of Du Quoin, Cindy Witbracht of Pinckneyville, Kristi Rennison of Pinckneyville and Jonathon Jacob Hammel of Du Quoin, and six great grandchildren - Megan McConville and Cole McConville, both of Arlington, TN, Elizabeth Witbracht, Sarah Rennison, Chase Witbracht and Luke Rennison, all of Pinckneyville.
He was preceded in death by his parents and one brother - Lester Hammel.
Funeral services were at 10:30 A.M., Friday, October 22, 2004 at the Old Du Quoin Baptist Church in Du Quoin with Rev. Ted Clark officiating.
Friends called from 5 to 8 P.M., Thursday at the Searby Funeral Home in Du Quoin and from 9:30 A.M. until the time of service at the church on Friday.
Interment was in the Old Du Quoin Cemetery at Du Quoin.
Friends may make memorials to the Old Du Quoin Baptist Church, Luke Memorial Hospice, or St. Jude's Children's Hospital.
